Strategic plan

​​Western Australia is one of the most culturally diverse States in Australia and has prospered and benefited from its diversity.

The Office of Multicultural Interests (OMI) works to assist the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Interests and the State Government to achieve the full potential of our multiculturalism.

Office of Multicultural Interests Strategic Plan 2014–2018

OMI's Strategic Plan 2014–2018 w​​​​​​​as developed through consultations with culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) communities, government and non-government organisations, business and industry groups, young people and the Minister’s Multicultural Advisory Council. Further input was gathered through two online surveys—one for the general public and the other for young people—and through written submissions responding to a discussion paper.

Content of the plan was also informed by a review of international and national literature that helped identify three key issues as a focus for the consultations: managing ‘super diversity’, social cohesion, and economic and social benefits.

The strategic plan focuses on four main objectives:

  1. to strengthen the capacity of culturally diverse communities
  2. to support the develop​ment of culturally inclusive policies, programs and services
  3. to facilitate full participation by CaLD communities in social, economic, cultural and civic activities
  4. to develop intercultural understanding and promote the benefits of Western Australia’s cultural diversity.

The WA Government proudly acknowledges and celebrates our cultural diversity as one of our State’s great strengths and plans actively for a future that captures its potential.​

Strategic​​​​ Plan 2014–18: Consultation Report

As part of the background for developing its 2014–18 Strategic Plan, OMI held four consultation forums: one for CaLD communities and non-government organisations, one for business and​​​​ industry groups, one for young people and another with the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Multicultural Advisory Council. The Strategic Plan 2014-18 Consultation Report report details the results of the consultations and other information-gathering strategies.​​

Annual report

OMI is part of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and includes its annual reporting within their report.
